A.J. Burnett, not CC Sabathia to pitch in pivotal Game 4

If Cliff Lee is the current definition of a great pitcher, then A.J. Burnett has to be the opposite. As Lee continues to throw 10+ strikeouts in a game, setting career highs and playoff records along the way, Burnett make his 2010 playoff debut in Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday night. Burnett’s start comes at a pivotal time for the Yankees, as a win will even the series at two games apiece, but a loss will put them into a hole where another loss will end their season.

Joey Votto, Edison Volquez and Johnny Cueto all arbitration-eligible

The Cincinnati Reds may have found an expensive problem for themselves this offseason. All of Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto and MVP candidate Joey Votto are all eligible for arbitration, and all have made cases that they’re worth significantly more than the $1.5M combined they have earned this past year. It’s likely that each one will earn money individually next season that will eclipse this combined total. But can the Reds afford to spend that much more money?

Ottawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner made an uncharacteristic NHL debut on Saturday night against Montreal. Lehner was recalled from Binghamton of the AHL before Saturday’s game and ended up making an appearance when he started the third period. Ottawa starting goalie Brian Elliot broke a skate between periods and the referees were not willing to wait for him to find a replacement. Lehner was thrown into net and brought his career minutes total to four minutes, 42 seconds.

Four aces set to duel in championship series

It is probable that the four best pitchers in baseball represent the four remaining teams in the playoffs. CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum are the faces of New York, Philadelphia, Texas and San Francisco, respectively, and all four are fronting the charge to the World Series for their clubs. It’s impossible to answer which ace trumps which ace, as any game featuring any two of these stars very well may end up with a 1-0 score or left to the bullpens to decide.

Cliff Lee makes history with the Texas Rangers

If you ever try to define the word "that," you should start by describing Cliff Lee; as in "Cliff Lee is that good." The oft-traded ace went out on Tuesday night and made pitching look as easy as finger painting in shutting down the Tampa Bay Rays for the second time in their ALDS matchup, setting a number of records along the way. If you saw the game, you could only be left with one thought: "That was one hell of a performance."

Hand gestures and hits from behind worth equal suspensions

Colin Campbell was busy on Tuesday, handing out a number of suspensions. Among the hit list was James Wisniewski of the Islanders for his obscene gesture towards Sean Avery, as well as Niklas Hjalmarsson on Chicago for his blind hit from behind against Jason Pominville, which resulted in Pominville's being carried off the ice on a stretcher. Both Wisniewski and Hjalmarsson were suspended for a pair of games for their individual and fundamentally different rule infractions.

Eric Hinske’s World Series run is over

Eric Hinske has begun an unusually long offseason. After his Atlanta Braves were eliminated by the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year finds himself unemployed yet again as his latest one year contract ended with the Braves hopes of making it back to the World Series for the first time since 1999. He’ll now have to go home and watch the Series on television for his first time since 2006.

Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati Reds and cruise through opening round

When people predicted that the National League’s best offensive team might threaten the two-time NL defending champions, they were sorely wrong. The Phillies swept the Reds in what turned out to be a pushover for a divisional series, sweeping Cincinnati in three straight and celebrating with champagne in the locker room afterwards. While this kind of celebration isn’t that common after winning a divisional series, it’s also not common to throw two complete games, including a no hitter.
Carl Crawford extends time in Tampa with long ball

Carl Crawford will play at least one more game as a Ray. Thanks to an insurance home run in the top of the 9th in Game 3 of his team’s series against Texas, Tampa Bay staved off elimination and will live to play on Sunday. It seems right now that any game could be Crawford’s last in Tampa as he’ll test free agency this offseason and look for a team that can not only help him win a World Series, but pay him what he feels he’s worth to do so.

The Carolina Hurricanes may put in a request to play all of their games in Finland. The ‘Canes won their second game in Helsinki in as many tries – and as many games this season – with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Last year, Carolina only won two of their first 18 games; which was directly responsible for their finishing with just 80 points. By November 13 of last season, the Hurricanes had eight points total.
